What is a Strawberry White Chocolate Matcha Latte?

It’s a matcha latte with melted white chocolate and strawberry flavor. It’s not the most common flavor combination since it’s a niche flavor, but it tastes really good! Strawberry and cream is already a classic combo, which is similar in flavor to white chocolate.

Matcha pairs nicely with strawberries and white chocolate separately, so it must taste good with both of them together. The fruit doesn’t overpower the matcha, and the white chocolate adds a nice creaminess. Very balanced and reminds me of a creamsicle!

What is the Cracking Chocolate Drink?

This was a trend on social media where you coat the inside of a plastic cup with a thin layer of melted chocolate and let it harden. Then, you add your iced drink inside and crack the chocolate to get this cool effect. I’m not sure where it came from, but it is very aesthetic and satisfying to look at.

It started with iced coffee and regular chocolate, which then came a slew of variations like white chocolate, matcha, ruby chocolate, etc.

I tried it with this recipe, and it was really fun! However, it’s a bit hard to drink because the shattered chocolate turns into shards, which you can only get by spooning it out of the drink. It also doesn’t add any flavor to the drink unless it melts.

Does Strawberry Taste Good With Matcha?

You bet it does! It’s one of the most popular matcha combinations out there, and practically every coffee shop and boba shop has its own version of a strawberry matcha latte.

Since matcha is creamy and earthy on its own, the strawberry adds a nice contrast with its tanginess. There’s something so satisfying about the two different yet complementary flavors. Sometimes, it can end up tasting like strawberry milk with a hint of matcha, but the best is when the matcha flavor shines through still.

Strawberry White Chocolate Matcha Latte Recipe: Ingredients

Here’s what you’ll need to make this strawberry white chocolate matcha latte at home:

  • White Chocolate — White chocolate chips or a piece of a bar work, you want it to be able to melt evenly. White chocolate melts also work, but the flavor might lean more to sweet than creamy. I like the Guittard chips, but they’re definitely pricey.
  • Matcha Powder — I use Ippodo, Matchakari, or Marukyu Koyamaen matcha powders, but I also love Rocky’s Matcha and Honeymoon matcha. Any powder that is made for lattes or even thin tea (usucha) works great here. Avoid any powders that are yellow-green or gray-green in color.
  • Water — You want to use hot water around 175 F for matcha, which you can measure with a thermometer or a temperature-controlled kettle. You can also guesstimate.
  • Milk — 2% or whole milk is my favorite for matcha, but you can use non-dairy milk as well. The more creamy the milk, the more diluted the flavor.
  • Ice
  • Strawberry Powder — I crush freeze-dried strawberries into a powder. Dried fruit has a more intense flavor than fresh fruit since all the water is removed.
  • Sugar or Sweetener — Use regular sugar or your favorite sweetener!

How to Make a Strawberry White Chocolate Matcha Latte

  1. Melt White Chocolate. Pour the white chocolate chips or pieces of white chocolate into a small bowl and melt in the microwave in short bursts of 20 – 30 seconds, stirring in between. You can also melt it using a bain marie method.
  2. Harden Chocolate Shell. Coat the inside of a plastic cup with a thin layer of melted white chocolate, but not so thin that it’s see-through. Once evenly coated, stick it in the fridge for 10 minutes while continuing the recipe.
  3. Make Strawberry Powder. Crush freeze-dried strawberries in a small cup or bowl using a spoon or muddler stick. Store the leftovers in an airtight bag.
  4. Whisk Matcha. Sift the matcha powder into a matcha bowl and add hot water. Then, vigorously whisk in a zigzag motion for 20 – 30 seconds using the bamboo whisk until frothy. There should be a thin layer of foam on top with tight bubbles, with a velvety texture.
  5. You can add the milk to the bowl or separately in the glass.
  6. Assemble Drink. Remove the chocolate cup from the fridge and add ice, matcha latte, and strawberry powder. Put the lid on the cup and squeeze the cup to crack the chocolate!
  7. Alternatively, you can enjoy this beverage without the cracked chocolate by mixing the strawberry powder into the melted white chocolate and combining it with the hot matcha tea before adding milk.
  8. Mix and Enjoy!

Tips for the Best Matcha Latte

  • Use Enough Chocolate: If you’re attempting the cracked chocolate, make sure you use enough melted chocolate to cover the sides of the cup. You don’t want it so thin that the chocolate breaks when you add ice, but you also don’t want it too thick!
  • Whisk Matcha Well: Make sure you whisk the matcha tea thoroughly so that there are no clumps left in the bowl. The clumps give a grainy texture to your drink, and it’s difficult to get rid of them once they’re in the liquid.

FAQ’s

Can I use strawberry syrup?

Yes, if you don’t have strawberry powder or fresh strawberries, strawberry syrup also works! Just note that it will be much sweeter with the syrup since it adds sugar alongside the chocolate. The strawberry flavor will also be less intense.

Can I use regular chocolate?

Yes, you can swap the white chocolate for regular chocolate! The flavor will become strawberry and chocolate rather than white chocolate, so more bitter and richer.
