Here’s how to make this easy strawberry milk matcha latte at home!

What is a Strawberry Milk Matcha Latte?

A strawberry milk matcha latte is a matcha latte made with strawberry milk, which can be store-bought or homemade.

It’s an easier version of the classic strawberry matcha latte, which is usually made with strawberry sauce or compote.

The strawberry and milk are already mixed in this strawberry milk version, while most other cafes serve it unmixed so you get that nice layered look with the strawberry on the bottom, the white milk, and the green matcha on top.

Why Strawberry Milk?

You may wonder why strawberry milk versus adding strawberry sauce to your drink. The answer is convenience.

Strawberry milk is easy, convenient, and (best of all) there is no cooking required. Especially if you make homemade strawberry sauce, you usually cook it on the stove until it’s ready, which means extra time and dishes.

For this strawberry milk, you just throw it all into a blender until smooth, then strain. That’s it! And while you still have to wash a few dishes, it’s super easy to clean it out compared to a sticky syrup in a pot.

How Does a Strawberry Milk Matcha Latte Taste?

Strawberry and matcha are such a good flavor combination.

This drink has a burst of strawberry flavor, followed by the creamy and earthy matcha. The strawberry doesn’t overpower the matcha, rather it enhances the matcha aftertaste in my opinion!

The contrasting flavors make it so addicting; it’s no wonder why this combination is on the default menu in every matcha cafe. You’ll also find it in boba shops as a strawberry matcha latte with boba!

Is Strawberry Milk and Matcha Good?

Yes! It’s one of the must-try matcha lattes, and you’ll probably find it at any cafe that sells matcha. I love a good strawberry matcha latte, and it’s definitely one of the best matcha latte variations out there.

The matcha’s earthiness perfectly balances the tart strawberry, and it’s even delicious in other formats like a matcha chocolate-covered strawberry, matcha with strawberry cold foam, matcha strawberry shortcake, and so on.

Plus, it also looks and tastes good.

How to Make Strawberry Milk

As mentioned, you don’t need to cook anything to make this strawberry milk. Simply wash and cut off the tops of your strawberries, then add strawberries, milk, and sugar into a blender and blend until smooth.

If you want it more chunky, feel free to blend it less to leave some chunks. For smoother milk, blend it until you can’t see chunks, then strain it out using a fine mesh sieve. You may need to push around the milk with a spoon to get it through the sieve, then scoop out the strawberry seeds and pulp.

I use regular sugar in this recipe, but I think condensed milk would taste phenomenal in this! Kind of like a strawberry agua fresca (this would be sooo good with matcha omg).

How to Prepare Matcha

Preparing matcha properly is one of the most important parts of making a great strawberry milk matcha latte! The best way to prepare matcha is by whisking, which helps make it frothy and smooth. (Clumpy matcha is so sad to drink).

You use a bamboo whisk to whisk matcha powder in a tea bowl in a zigzag motion until it’s nice and frothy. You can find matcha sets online that sell the bamboo whisk, matcha bowl, and whisk stand all together, or you can collect them separately.

But if you don’t have a whisk or bowl, you can also use different methods for preparing matcha, such as:

  • Shaking in a bottle or jar
  • Frothing matcha and water using a handheld whisk
  • Whisking with a fork and bowl

Note that the alternative methods won’t give you the best froth, but they do the job!

How to Get Good Matcha Powder

Using a good matcha powder is also important for a great matcha latte! In Western countries, ceremonial grade is the term used to describe “good quality” matcha, but these days it’s not the best label to look for as it’s a marketing term.

You should look for matcha that is first harvest for a robust, strong matcha flavor. But for lattes or even desserts, second-harvest matchas are perfectly fine. First harvest vs second harvest matchas differ in quality and flavor, but note that they are both good quality.

Good matcha powders will have a nice, deep green color, followed by a fragrant aroma! If you see a brownish matcha powder, run.

Best Matcha Powder Brands

I prefer Japanese brands for the best matcha powders because they are transparent about where their matcha is from and what harvest it is. Many American or Western matcha brands don’t disclose that information, which is important for knowing if their powder is good!

My favorites are:

But I’m always on the hunt for more, great matcha powders!

Different Ways to Make a Strawberry Matcha Latte

Curious about other ways to make a strawberry matcha latte? Here are some alternative methods:

  • Homemade strawberry syrup: This is the classic method for making matcha strawberry lattes! Just cook fresh or frozen strawberries, water, and sugar in a small pot and reduce until thick. It makes a jammy, delicious matcha latte!
  • Adding freeze dried strawberry powder: You can add this straight into milk for a concentrated matcha strawberry latte! It may be expensive, though.
  • Using strawberry jam: This is the ultimate lazy person hack for an easy strawberry matcha. However, jam is incredibly sweet so be careful!
  • Fresh strawberry sauce: You can blend strawberries, water, and sugar in a blender to make a fresh strawberry sauce you can add as a layer to your drink. Many cafes use this method since it’s fresh and easy! The caveat is that you can only use fresh strawberries for this.

Tips:

Here are some tips for making a creamy strawberry matcha latte at home!

  • Froth Strawberry Milk: If you have a handheld or electric frother, froth your strawberry milk for an incredible cold foam. The extra protein from the strawberry helps make a really thick and luscious foam.
  • Add Vanilla: Add a few drops or a teaspoon of vanilla extract to your drink for a creamy flavor. It will help balance out the tart flavor and also add extra depth.
  • Blend into a Smoothie: Blend the strawberry milk with some ice and matcha powder to make a strawberry matcha smoothie! You might want to use a lower-quality matcha powder for this and reserve your better powders for drinking on their own!
