What is a Protein Matcha Latte?

It’s a matcha latte with protein powder added to it! I use vanilla protein powder to make it taste like ice cream, and it adds a whopping 15 g of protein. Protein beverages are nothing new, like your favorite protein shake or smoothie. But why not add it to cafe beverages, too?
You can mix protein powder into milk and use that as a base for matcha. You could also use a protein shake instead for convenience.
How Much Protein is in This?
This protein matcha latte uses half a scoop of vanilla protein powder, which is roughly 12-15 grams of protein. Regular milk also has 8 grams of protein per cup, so this matcha latte has around 20-23 grams of protein in it. I find half a scoop to be the perfect flavor, as a full scoop overpowers the matcha flavor. A full scoop also makes a thicker texture, but I don’t like my lattes to be too thick and shake-like.
This is a great companion to meals or even in the morning with a well-rounded breakfast.
Does Matcha Have Protein?
Well… matcha does have protein in it, but it’s a very small amount. Matcha’s protein content is 17.3 g/100 g. A serving of matcha powder is usually 2 grams, which means every serving has roughly 0.344 grams of protein in it. It’s definitely not a large source of protein, but it provides other sources of nutrition in the form of antioxidants, nutrients, and fiber.
How to Mix Protein Powder into Milk

Like most powders, you need to whisk or shake them to combine them well. Most gym-goers will shake protein powder in a blender bottle with milk or water, then drink that as a protein shake. However, you can use a simple mason jar or water bottle as well.
My favorite way, though, is to use a handheld frother! It does the same thing, and you don’t need to wash another dish. Just froth it for 3 – 5 seconds, and you’ll have instant protein milk that’s super smooth and frothy.
What Does a Protein Matcha Latte Taste Like?
The matcha latte takes on the flavor of whatever flavored protein powder you use. For this recipe, I use vanilla protein powder, and the drink tastes like a vanilla milkshake with an earthy matcha flavor. If you use unsweetened protein powder, I recommend adding a little sweetener to mask any chalky or oat-y flavor.
Most protein powders are flavored and sweetened, so it makes it really easy to combine and make a matcha latte with. You don’t need to add any extra syrups or sugar, and it tastes really good!

Tips for the Best Protein Matcha Latte
- Use a Good Protein Powder: If you’re a protein powder connoisseur, then you’ll know that not all protein powders are alike. Low-quality protein powder tastes chalky, metallic, or even has a weird aftertaste. You want to use a good-quality powder that has a nice flavor and texture after mixing with liquid. This might take some trial and error as you try powders.
- Blend Well: No one likes a chalky protein powder texture! Make sure you incorporate the powder into the milk well so you have a smooth and creamy base for the matcha.
- Use a Bitter Matcha: Contrary to popular belief, you want to use a stronger-tasting matcha in this drink. Since vanilla protein powder has a strong flavor, you want to use a bitter matcha that you’ll taste after you mix it in. I use a cafe-grade matcha powder that still tastes like matcha with the protein milk!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there matcha-flavored protein?
Now there is! There used to be only standard flavors of protein powder like vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry, but there are dozens of small brands popping up with their own creative flavors. I’ve seen milk tea, matcha, coconut mango, cinnamon roll, and ube-flavored protein powders. The flavors are endless! Now, are they good? I’m not sure…
Can I use any protein powder?
Yes! The beauty of this recipe is that you can swap out the vanilla protein powder for any flavor you’d like. I think chocolate or strawberry is the next variation to try, or try tea on tea action with a milk tea flavored powder.
What is protein powder made of?
Protein powder is made from either whey or plant-based sources. Whey is a protein extracted from milk, which comes in liquid form as a byproduct of cheese making. It’s dried, then processed into your favorite powders or protein-fortified food.
