Creamy Piña Colada Smoothie (No Banana & No Juice!)

If you’re dreaming of a tropical getaway but currently spending a blazing hot afternoon at home, this healthy piña colada smoothie is about to transport you! It is the perfect warm-weather treat—frosty, thick-ish, and soooo refreshing. Skipping the ultra-sweet syrups and mixes for this recipe, we use real, frozen fruit and no refined sugars. It’s light, perfectly balanced, and just sweet enough to be your new favorite smoothie!

Why This Pina Colada Smoothie is the Best You’ll Ever Have

I hate when smoothies are watery, icy, or too liquid. I love thick smoothies that are creamy and borderline soft-serve consistency. So, if you hate watery smoothies too, you’ll love this one.

Since the smoothie only uses frozen pineapple for the fruit flavor, you get a perfectly slushified texture that’s still amazingly creamy. Skipping the juice prevents a super cloying experience and leaves you without a sugar crash. A good scoop of coconut yogurt adds the bestttt tang and creaminess, and altogether, it’s just an incredibly refreshing, bright smoothie that’s actually healthy.

Health Benefits of a Homemade Piña Colada Smoothie

Traditional piña coladas are packed with refined sugars, but this homemade version is a nutrient-dense drink with so many benefits:

  • Gut-Loving Probiotics: The coconut yogurt is packed with active cultures and probiotics that support a healthy, balanced gut and improve digestion. Yay to a healthy gut!
  • Pineapple Nutrients: Pineapple is loaded with Vitamin C to support your immune system. It also contains bromelain, a natural enzyme that aids digestion and helps reduce inflammation!
  • Healthy Fats for Lasting Energy: Coconut milk has plant-based healthy fats that keep you full and provide sustained energy.

It’s an ultra-refreshing, antioxidant-rich drink that tastes incredible and actually makes you feel good.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • 1 1/2 cups frozen pineapple: The absolute best part of the smoothie. The frozen fruit gives the smoothie a slushy texture, so you don’t need ice cubes!
  • 1 cup coconut milk (mixed with 1 tbsp coconut cream): A little fat gives so much flavor. I add a tablespoon of coconut cream to give it more fat and creaminess.
  • 1/4 cup coconut yogurt: The secret weapon! It adds a nice tang and gut-healthy probiotics, making this drink extra healthy.
  • 1 tbsp honey

How to Make a Piña Colada Smoothie

  1. Load Blender: Add the liquids first, then pour in coconut milk, coconut yogurt, honey, and frozen pineapple.
  2. Blend: Start your blender on low to break down the frozen fruit chunks, then crank it up to high. Blend until the mixture is completely smooth, frosty, and thick-ish.
  3. Pour and Serve: Pour the slushy tropical blend into your favorite glassware and enjoy immediately! (Optional: smear coconut yogurt on the inside of your glass for a cool white stripe effect.)

Fun Garnishes

The best part of making drinks at home is decorating them! Here are some fun garnishes to try:

  • Classic pineapple slice: Slot a fresh pineapple wedge right onto the rim of your glass for that instant resort vibe.
  • The tiny umbrella: Because nothing says “I’m on vacation mode” quite like a bright, retro paper cocktail umbrella popping out of a frosty drink.
  • Fresh green herbs: Slap a sprig of fresh mint or a couple of vibrant pineapple leaves right on top for some green contrast.
  • A zesty tajín rim: Dip the rim of your glass in honey or lime juice, then coat it in Tajín. The spicy, salty, lime kick pairs amazingly with pineapple.
  • Toasted coconut flakes: Sprinkle a handful of golden, toasted shredded coconut for textural crunch and contrast!

Tips for the Best Smoothie

  • Follow blender hierarchy: Did you know there’s a correct order of ingredients when adding them into a blender? Always pour your liquid ingredients first, followed by anything in whole pieces. This creates a vortex that pulls the fruit down into the blades, giving you a smoother blend.
  • Thaw pineapple slightly: If you don’t have a high-powered blender, let your frozen pineapple sit on the counter for about 5 minutes before blending. It will still keep the drink frosty and thick-ish, but it will blend much faster and smoother without needing extra liquid.
  • Add coconut water: If you want a lighter, more hydrating version after a workout or on a blazing hot day, replace half of the coconut milk with coconut water. You’ll get natural electrolytes!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use fresh pineapple instead of frozen?

You can, but the texture won’t be the same. Fresh pineapple will give you a thinner, shake-like consistency rather than a thick, frosty texture. If you only have fresh fruit on hand, chop it into chunks and pop it in the freezer for as long as possible. I don’t recommend blending with ice unless you drink the smoothie immediately. Otherwise, it gets diluted.

What can I use instead of coconut yogurt?

If you can’t find coconut yogurt, Greek yogurt works. It still adds a nice tang and a creamy texture, along with a nice little boost of protein.
