What is Philz Coffee?
Philz Coffee originates in the Mission District in San Francisco, started by Phil Jaber, a Palestinian immigrant who first owned a corner store in 1978. He experimented with dozens of coffee recipes before transitioning the bodega into a coffee shop in 2003. They’re famous for their Palestinian coffee flavors like mint and rose, and their warm customer service, as if you stepped into grandma’s house.
When you walk into a Philz, you go right up to the bar to place your order, upon which the barista asks if you want it Philz way or sweet and creamy.
They’ve since expanded to 70 locations, mostly in metropolitan cities, with many in the Bay Area. Just recently, they opened a Philz near my house (which is so dangerous for me).
What is Philz Coffee Mint Mojito?

One of their best-selling drinks is the mint mojito, which is a creamy, strong, and minty iced coffee. Upon first sip, you get a refreshing flavor followed by the sweet cream coffee. It’s so creamy that many people think it’s a latte, but it’s actually just filtered coffee!
It’s my favorite drink on their menu, and according to their CEO, it makes up for 30% of their orders!
What’s in the Philz Mint Mojito?
Philz Mint Mojito is made with their Tesora coffee blend, which is a medium roast coffee that they roast at their local roastery in Oakland. It has caramel, nutty, and chocolate notes, which make it the perfect pair for mint. All their coffee is drip-based, so you get a strong, robust, and smooth cup.
To make a mint mojito, they muddle mint leaves (stem and all) with brown sugar and a little hot water or coffee. Then, they add their Tesora-brewed coffee and finish with a splash of frothed heavy cream. Top it off with ice and a sprig of mint.
It looks more complicated than it actually is to make, and it’s so good!
What Does the Philz Mint Mojito Coffee Taste Like?

The Philz Mint Mojito tastes like nothing I’ve ever had before! It’s smooth, nutty, roasted, minty, and creamy.
Because they use real mint, the minty flavor is not overbearing, like toothpaste. The mint tastes sweet, mild, and refreshing, and makes it super addictive. The brown sugar gives it a subtle caramel flavor, which blends perfectly with the coffee.
Philz Coffee Mint Mojito Recipe: Ingredients

Here’s what you’ll need to recreate Philz Coffee’s Mint Mojito at home:
- 1 – 2 Springs of Fresh Mint — This is the key to making a great mint mojito coffee! Mint extract has a toothpaste flavor to it and often is too strong. You want fresh mint, yes, stems and leaves both! Most of the flavor actually comes from the stems, so you definitely want some stalk in your cup.
- ½ Cup of Coffee Beans — Philz uses their Tesora bean blend for most (if not all) their drinks, so for the closest flavor I would use that. However, you can use any medium roast coffee bean that has notes of nuts, chocolate, and caramel for a similar flavor.
- 1 ½ Cups of Water — You’ll want just boiled water to brew your coffee. You can use a regular kettle or a temperature controlled kettle for accurate brew temperatures.
- 2 Cups of Ice
- Sweet and Creamy:
- ¼ Cup of Heavy Cream — Without cream, you won’t get that signature creamy (lol) flavor that makes this drink so satisfying. For a lower fat option, you could use whole or oat milk, but the drink will be more watery.
- 2 Tbsp of Brown Sugar — Light brown or dark brown sugar is perfect! You could substitute for regular sugar or agave, but the brown sugar just adds that unique molasses flavor.
- Philz Way: halve the amount of Sweet and Creamy sugar and heavy cream
How to Make Philz Mint Mojito Coffee

- Brew Coffee. Grind your coffee beans coarse and add them to your pourover filter.
- For regular pourover coffee: Shake into a flat surface, then boil water and pour a little bit to bloom the coffee. Once bloomed, add half of the water in a circular motion starting from the center, spiraling out for even coverage. When all the water drips out, repeat until you run out of water. Prepare a large cup of ice on the side.
- After all the water drips out, remove the filter. Immediately pour the coffee into ice to cool it and use for the drink. Alternatively, you can let the coffee cool until room temperature or below.
- For flat bottom filter coffee: You can also use a regular drip coffee machine with a flat bottom filter. Add the coffee grounds into the basket and pour hot water and stir for 5 – 10 seconds. Let the coffee drip into the coffee pot. Prepare a large cup of ice on the side.
- Once brewed, pour the hot coffee onto ice to cool it immediately. Alternatively, you can let the coffee cool until room temperature or below.
- Muddle Mint and Sugar. Add the mint leaves and stems, brown sugar, and a little bit of hot coffee to your cup. Using a muddler stick, muddle the mint and sugar until the sugar dissolves and the mint releases its oils. It should smell aromatic.
- Add Coffee and Cream. Once muddled, add the coffee. Shake your heavy cream for 10 – 20 seconds until frothy. You can also froth it with a handheld frother for extra froth.
- Using a spoon, stir to create a small whirpool. Then pour your heavy cream into the whirlpool and stir until smooth.
- Ice, Garnish and Serve! Fill the cup with ice and garnish with a sprig of mint.
Tips for the Best Mint Mojito Coffee
- Use Cold Coffee: If you can, let your coffee cool completely and chill in the fridge before using. Warm coffee melts ice fast and will water down your drink, so cold coffee is ideal!
- Froth the Cream: Philz baristas shakes the heavy cream container to add air into the cream so that it has a frothy texture. If you want an extra frothy texture, you can pour some cream out and froth it in a cup using a handheld frother.
- Use Premade Coffee: The longest part of this recipe is brewing the coffee itself. If you want to skip that process, you can use premade filter coffee or cold brew coffee for an extra kick.

FAQ’s
How many calories are in the mint mojito from Philz?
The cream is what makes up most of the calories in the mint mojito. One medium sized mint mojito from Philz has around 430 calories. Which makes sense, considering that it has 3 – 4 tbsps of heavy cream, which has 150 – 200 calories.
How much caffeine is in the mint mojito?
Philz uses brewed filter coffee which can vary in caffeine depending on grind size and brew time. According to a tweet they put out, their medium cup or 16 oz has 325 mg of caffeine, which is roughly 5 times more than one shot of espresso. Definitely a drink you’ll want to drink in the morning!
Can I use espresso?
Yes, you can use espresso isntead of brewed coffee. To mimic a similar texture, you can brew two shots of espresso and dilute it with water to make an americano. It will have a lighter flavor than brewed coffee. You could also make this into a mint mojito latte instead by having the base as espresso and adding milk for 60% of the drink. The flavor will be milkier, but taste delicious!
