Oat Milk Matcha Latte: Easy, Sweet, and Creamy

Looking for a creamy, sweet treat with a nice energy boost? Oat milk and matcha are the way to go! It’s a delicious drink that’s so easy to make. It takes less than 5 minutes and only 4 ingredients; you can even make it ahead of time to have it ready to drink.

Instead of regular sugar, you have extra creaminess from the condensed milk. It makes matcha taste like ice cream or candy! It’s my go-to sweetener for matcha.

Here’s how to make a great oat milk matcha latte at home!

What is Matcha?

This delicious, powdered green tea is now taking the world by storm!

Matcha are ground green tea leaves with a fragrant aroma and earthy or nutty taste. Many matchas also have a characteristic umami-ness that makes them so delicious and sought after.

Matcha is different from the tea leaves you might find in the store. The tea leaves are shade-grown, which forces the plant to produce more chlorophyll, the green compound responsible for making leaves green and a crucial part of photosynthesis.

It’s a popular alternative to coffee and has become a very popular cafe beverage. From matcha lattes, cream top matchas, and more, all specialty cafes now have at least one version on their menu.

Why is Matcha Popular?

Matcha is super popular with young people, especially Gen Z (like me)! It’s considered healthy, a better way to get caffeine, and aesthetic.

It’s also delicious, sweet, and creamy, and somewhat niche. I think many people like matcha so much because it’s different and cool. It’s also crept into a lot of aesthetic photos and posts, similar to iced lattes and coffees.

Unsurprisingly, many Japanese matcha producers struggle to meet demand thanks to social media and changing growing conditions.

Best Matcha Powders

However, there are a lot of great quality matcha powders on the market to explore! Marukyu Koyamaen and Horii Shichimeien are two Kyoto brands that exploded in popularity in the past couple of months and are constantly sold out.

While I love Marukyu and use it routinely, it’s just difficult to find these days. So, try some other amazing brands like Ippodo, Matchaeologist, or smaller local brands in your city or hometown.

My favorite matcha of all time is Ippodo’s Ummon blend, which is a punch of umami and perfect in lattes.

Most, if not all, matcha brands have an online website where you can shop, so it’s easy and convenient!

How to Make Matcha

Matcha needs to be mixed with water before drinking. It doesn’t require brewing like other teas do since it’s such a fine powder.

Traditionally, you use a chawan and chasen to whisk matcha until a froth forms. However, it’s not required and you can use different methods to prepare matcha. What matters is that it’s mixed well with water before serving.

Some alternative methods:

  • Shaking a lidded jar until the matcha turns frothy.
  • Using a handheld frother in a cup.
  • Blending matcha in a small blender.
  • Mixing using a small French press.

How to Make an Oat Milk Matcha Latte

You’ll need oat milk, condensed milk, matcha powder, water, ice, and oat milk.

First, whisk together your matcha powder and water until a foam covers the entire surface. This usually takes about 15-20 seconds of vigorous whisking in a Z motion. Circular motions won’t mix your matcha powder well.

You can then add condensed milk to your matcha and blend or mix. Or, you can dissolve condensed milk into your oat milk. You may want to use a little hot water and dissolve the condensed milk first before adding oat milk. That way, it will mix much easier.

In your drinking cup, add ice, milk, and top with your matcha!

Now you have a delicious iced oat milk matcha latte.

How to Make it Hot

You can also make a hot oat milk matcha latte by heating up your oat milk, frothing it, then adding it to your matcha. Here are some ways to make hot, frothy oat milk:

  • Use an espresso machine frothing wand.
  • Heat oat milk and use a French press to froth. Make sure the glass is heatproof.
  • Use a handheld frother and a cup.
  • Froth oat milk in an electric frother that has a heating option.

Is Oat Milk Good for Matcha Lattes?

Oat milk is a great milk for matcha lattes. It’s neutral in taste, doesn’t impart any flavor to your drink, and also works well with most sweeteners.

It also is super creamy, which makes your drink extra delicious. Compared to other alternative milk, it’s a great option for lactose people or those with dietary restrictions.

For frothing, oat milk is one of the easiest kinds of milk to froth, and it also stays frothy! Many other milks don’t froth well, making for a less satisfying drinking experience.

What Milk is Best for Matcha Lattes?

I’m a dairy girl, so I think whole milk is the best for matcha lattes. But besides actual milk, I think oat and soy milk are the best milk for matcha.

Oat milk, as mentioned, has a neutral flavor, froths well, is creamy, and works well with matcha. It’s also readily available in cafes. However, the downside is that oat milk can have a lot of added sugar, which isn’t friendly for all diets.

Soy milk has a strong soy flavor, but it works insanely well with matcha. Both have earthy flavors that work great together, and honey is a good sweetener pairing. Soy is also nutrient-dense and has little to no added sugars.

However, soy is not as creamy as oat milk.

What Sweeteners Work Best in Matcha?

Matcha works well with most sweeteners! It works great with honey, maple syrup, brown sugar, agave, condensed milk, cane sugar, etc.

You can’t go wrong adding your favorite plain sweetener, as matcha tastes more creamy with sugar!

If you’re feeling creative, add different flavors to matcha. Matcha works well with floral, fruity, or creamy flavors. For example:

  • Lavender
  • Rose
  • Mango
  • Strawberry
  • Blueberry
  • White Chocolate
  • Condensed Milk
  • Vanilla

Green dream! A matcha oatmilk latte with a creamy sweetness that balanced each other out so nicely. It’s kind of ironic because condensed milk has dairy in it but there are no rules. You can use a vegan condensed milk to make it non-dairy!

Notes

If this recipe tastes too milky or not strong in matcha, use 1/2 tsp more matcha in your drink. Alternatively, you can also use less milk.

Tips:

Here are some tips on making a sweet and creamy oat milk matcha latte with condensed milk:

  • You can make condensed milk if you don’t have it in your kitchen. Boil and simmer a 1:1 ratio of milk and sugar in a pot until it reduces to half its size. Stir semi-constantly on low heat. It will turn ivory in color.
  • For a festive twist, add your favorite spices to your drink! Like cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, etc.
  • Make your own oat milk for a healthier alternative. Blend a 1:1 ratio of soaked rolled oats and water in a blender until smooth. Then strain and flavor if desired. Store in the fridge and consume within 3-5 days.
