How to Make a Matcha Latte With Cold Foam

Trying to recreate the famous matcha latte with cold foam at home? An iced matcha latte with sweet cream cold foam is one of my favorite drinks to make because it’s so simple and classic. It’s also really easy to make with ingredients you may already have in your fridge!

Matcha with sweet cream cold foam tastes so good together, and you can easily save your money from buying it out to making it in.

Here’s how to make a matcha latte with sweet cream cold foam at home!

What is Cold Foam?

Keeping track of what can be confusing with all the different cafe definitions!

Cold foam is simply a frothed cold milk that creates a soft and fluffy foam layer, perfect for topping lattes, coffees, teas, etc. However, when people say cold foam, they usually refer to sweet cream cold foam or even just soft whipped cream.

Traditionally, cold foam is made with 2% milk, but these days, you can use any milk you’d like, from oat milk to half and half.

In this recipe, cold foam means sweet cream cold foam, which is part heavy cream, milk, and sugar.

Sweet cream cold foams are usually vanilla-flavored or plain, but it’s the perfect palette to add different flavors, too. You’ll see all sorts of creative flavors like cherry, blueberry, peppermint, chocolate, lavender, maple, etc.

What is a Matcha Latte with Cold Foam?

A matcha with cold foam is an iced matcha latte topped with a sweet cream cold foam.

I want to say that it became popular at Starbucks when people started adding cold foam to drinks other than cold brew coffee. It’s an incredibly popular drink, and people have even added flavored cold foams like chocolate or lavender, which are amazing with matcha.

You can easily order this drink from most cafes that have a cream-top topping!

Is Matcha Good With Cold Foam?

The cold foam makes the matcha latte super creamy and delicious! Matcha goes great with sweet and creamy flavors, so adding cold foam is a no-brainer.

It’s such a good combination that cafes now have matcha einspanners (a matcha latte with a cream top) as one of their default menu items. There’s just something about the soft and fluffy cream and the silky, smooth matcha latte that makes it so satisfying to drink.

Since matcha can sometimes be on the earthy and slightly bitter side, something creamy helps balance it out! They’re a great complement to each other.

How to Make Sweet Cream Cold Foam

Making sweet cream cold foam at home is very simple, quick, and easy!

All you need is heavy cream, 2% milk, and sugar (or your favorite sweetener.)

To whip the cream, you can either use an electric frother or a blender. The electric frother is best for at-home use since you probably are only making a small portion. The blender is better for cafes or when you making drinks for a lot of people.

With a frother, add all the ingredients to a cup and froth until the cream gets soft and fluffy.

Note: Make sure it’s still pourable after! You don’t want to make whipped cream.

Can You Make Matcha Cold Foam?

People are so creative; matcha cold foam is very popular now! Since sweet cream cold foam is basically a blank canvas, you can make so many different types of cold foam flavors.

I’ve seen matcha cold foam added to coffee, lattes, brewed tea, and even the famous pink drink! It adds a nice touch of bitterness and earthiness that balances sweet drinks nicely.

To make matcha cold foam, just sift a 1/2 teaspoon of matcha powder into your cold foam and whip it together. The sifting helps your cream become smooth, otherwise, you’ll end up with grainy bits of matcha that are pockets of bitterness.

How Much Matcha to Use

Everyone loves a balanced and bold matcha latte! No one likes paying $7 for a sad matcha latte, but the difference between a matcha latte that looks like milk and a nice, green one is the amount of matcha powder you use.

Generally, cafes will use 3g of matcha, or about a teaspoon and a half per drink, and 10-12 oz of milk (about a cup to a cup and a half.) My matcha ratio is a little stronger: 3g matcha, 6 oz milk, and 1/4 cup of water for whisking.

This ratio gives you a strong, bold matcha latte that’s just as green as your plants! It gives a balanced flavor and you can taste the matcha a lot!

Depending on your tastes, you can also experiment with the amount of matcha in your drink. For a lighter matcha latte, use 1 tsp or even a 1/2 tsp if you want it mild. For a stronger taste, use 2 tsp of matcha.

How to Whisk Matcha

Ever tried to make a matcha latte without whisking matcha first? You get an ultra-grainy, dissatisfying latte. I remember my first attempts at making a matcha latte without whisking matcha properly… Grain-town haha.

Since matcha powder isn’t a brewed tea, you have to whisk it in water before adding it to milk or water. Because powders tend to stick to themselves, it’s hard to mix it straight into liquid (just like how flour doesn’t mix with water well.)

To get rid of clumps, you whisk matcha powder in water using a bamboo whisk, which is designed specifically for matcha. You want to whisk in a zigzag motion to form a nice foam, which gives the matcha a smooth texture. See my matcha whisking tutorial here.

You can also whisk matcha without a whisk using an electric frother or lidded shaker.
