Marshmallow Matcha Latte: Easy How to Recipe

If you have extra marshmallows lying around and you don’t know what to do with them, try making this fun marshmallow matcha latte! I originally made this as an Easter version with Peeps, but you can easily make this with any regular marshmallows, which add the perfect touch of sweetness!

This marshmallow matcha latte has a touch of vanilla and a creamy texture from the gelatin (if you use actual marshmallows). There’s no way that this combination doesn’t taste good!

Here’s how to make a marshmallow matcha latte at home!

What is a Marshmallow Matcha Latte?

A marshmallow matcha latte is a marshmallow-flavored matcha latte, either with syrup or by melting marshmallows into the drink itself. It’s a creamy, sweet, and satisfying matcha latte that has a subtle vanilla taste. If you toast the marshmallows, you’ll get an even more satisfying flavor with a subtle caramel taste.

While it’s not too different from a classic vanilla matcha latte or sweetened matcha, it’s a fun way to use up any old marshmallows or marshmallow syrup you have! Plus, you might find that it tastes different or even better.

Do Marshmallows Taste Good With Matcha?

It’s hard to find a bad pairing with marshmallows, especially with desserts. Since marshmallows are just a chewy sugar pillow, the texture is what really sets them apart. Flavor-wise, marshmallows taste basically like sugar, and sometimes with a vanilla flavor.

Matcha’s earthiness goes incredibly well with anything sweet and creamy. Just think: matcha white chocolate, matcha with milk, matcha cookies, etc. The sugar and milk often round out any strong flavors, and with matcha, it makes it more mild and creamy.

Naturally, marshmallows taste great with matcha! Even better, matcha marshmallows… yum.

What Are Marshmallows Made Out Of?

If you don’t know what marshmallows are made out of, it’s really simple!

Marshmallows are always made with sugar syrup and gelatin, often with corn syrup. In technical terms, a marshmallow is a stabilized foam thanks to the gelatin.

Food Science Break: When you whip the marshmallow mixture, the sugar traps small air bubbles between its molecules, which are then trapped thanks to the gelatin’s protein structure.

Now, once you have this marshmallow base, you can add flavors and colors on top of it. You can make classic flavors like vanilla and strawberry to experiment with more creative flavors like ube, pandan, coconut, and more.

How to Add Marshmallow Flavor

There are multiple ways you can add marshmallow flavor to your matcha latte.

The easiest way is to use store-bought marshmallow syrup, which you can find online either from the syrup brand’s website, Amazon, or a specialty grocery store.

You can make homemade marshmallow syrup easily with just marshmallows and water, which makes a delicious syrup you can use for all sorts of drinks. (More on this later).

Alternatively, marshmallow fluff is great to use when you want convenience, and you can either dissolve it into water or mix it directly into milk.

How to Make Marshmallow Syrup

For homemade marshmallow syrup, you’ll need marshmallows and water. That’s it!

I like to use a 1:1 ratio of marshmallows to water since marshmallows have less sugar per tsp than actual sugar.

You can use any marshmallow you’d like, but note that the syrup consistency will have a thicker texture than normal due to the gelatin. It might be viscous and unappealing, but trust me, that’s normal and tastes so good in matcha!

Dissolve the marshmallows in water on the stove, then simmer until you reach your desired consistency. If you want a sweeter syrup, add a little sugar and mix to dissolve.

Let the syrup cool before bottling and storing in the fridge for 1-2 weeks.

How to Prepare Matcha

Finally, the most important part of making a matcha latte: whisking it properly!

Now, I have my lazy days where I use an electric handheld frother to mix my matcha into water for my latte. But honestly, whisking it is the best way to get a smooth, concentrated matcha for drinks.

First, you’ll need to soak your matcha whisk in hot (not boiling) water until the bristles soften. Then, sift the matcha powder into a matcha bowl, and add your water. For 20-30 seconds, whisk your matcha in a zigzag or M motion until a foam forms on top.

You want a smooth and creamy foam with small, tight bubbles.

Marshmallow Matcha Latte Recipe

  1. Make or Buy Marshmallow Syrup. For homemade marshmallow syrup, simmer marshmallows and water on the stove until the marshmallows dissolve in the water. Then, simmer until you get the desired consistency. If you’d like to get a thicker syrup, you can add some sugar, but the marshmallows already have sugar. Lazy Version: Dissolve marshmallows in a little bit of hot water, then add milk directly to it. Your milk will be a little more watery, but it’s a super-easy hack!
  2. Whisk Matcha. Sift matcha powder in a matcha bowl, then add water. Vigorously whisk the matcha tea powder with a bamboo whisk in a zigzag motion for 20-30 seconds or until you get a nice froth on top. You want small, tight bubbles and a smooth foam.
  3. Assemble Drink. Add ice and marshmallow syrup (or marshmallow milk) in a glass, then top with your whisked matcha. Garnish with marshmallows and toast with a handheld blowtorch (or over a burner) if desired!
