How to Make a Lucky Charms Matcha Latte

If you’re looking to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, you have to make this Lucky Charms matcha latte! While the only thing remotely seasonal about the cereal is its branding, it’s one of the best seasonal drinks to make for March.

Not only does it look great, but it also tastes amazing! Who doesn’t love a toasted oat and sweet marshmallow-flavored matcha latte? Plus, it’s not too sweet and perfect to drink.

So, here’s how to make a great Lucky Charms matcha latte at home!

What are Lucky Charms?

If you’re American, you’ll know (and perhaps love) the classic Lucky Charms cereal, which is one of the most popular cereals in the States. According to this study, it’s number 4 on the list of top US cereals!

Lucky Charms is a frosted, toasted oat cereal made by General Mills which features small, colorful bite-sized marshmallow bits (or marbits as they call them).

The marshmallows are super colorful and come in all different shapes, like pink hearts, red balloons, a rainbow, and, of course, the green clover. It debuted in 1964 after John Holahan created the cereal with cut up Cheerios and Circus Peanuts (his favorite candy which inspired this cereal.)

They’re one of my favorite childhood cereals and I’ll still eat them time to time for a sweet treat. I used to love the marshmallows, but as I’ve gotten older, the cereal bits are actually my favorite now! (Which, honestly, is not that surprising since my favorite cereal is Honey Nut Cheerios.)

What Do Lucky Charms Taste Like?

Lucky Charms taste like a frosted version of Cheerios, but they’re not overly sweet like Cinnamon Toast Crunch or Frosted Flakes. The cereal pieces by themselves are slightly sweet and have a toasted oat flavor, with an airy, crunchy texture.

The marshmallows are simply just sweet, with a cool crunchy texture of dehydrated marshmallow. Some people say they taste a slight fruitiness, but I don’t think there’s any fruit flavor. Perhaps it’s placebo from the colors?

With milk, the cereal retains its crunch and the toasted oat flavor is very noticeable. It’s not too sweet and the marshmallow and cereal balance each other out nicely.

What is in a Lucky Charms Matcha Latte?

A Lucky Charms matcha latte is simply Lucky Charms cereal milk with whisked matcha, that’s it! You can also add an optional garnish of Lucky Charms marshmallows or a cold foam. It’s super simple yet delicious, so it’s something anyone can make at home.

If you want some extra flavor, vanilla syrup is a popular flavor addition, or even condensed milk for extra creaminess. You could even use maple syrup, agave, honey, or brown sugar, too.

How to Make Lucky Charms Milk?

You can make cereal milk with any cereal you’d like, and they all follow a similar process of steeping the milk in the cereal.

For Lucky Charms milk, add equal parts cereal and milk to a cup or bowl, then let it steep for at least 5 minutes. The longer you steep it, the more flavorful it will be.

Once the milk steeps, it should be a pretty blue-green color.

I’ve made the milk in just 5 minutes, and it’s good enough for me! It’s not too sweet, and perfect for a matcha latte. If you steep it for a couple of hours, the marshmallows should almost compeltely dissolve leaving you with sweeter milk.

For a sweeter milk, you can also add more marshmallows than cereal, which is where the sweetness comes from.

After the cereal steeps, strain it out (and eat if it’s still crunchy) and voila, you have easy Lucky Charms milk!

Why Make This Lucky Charms Matcha Latte?

Because it’s fun! Haha, or because you have leftover Lucky Charms cereal and want a creative way to use the rest of it. It’s also an easy way to make a specialty flavored matcha latte, and you can prepare the cereal milk ahead of time so you can enjoy it for multiple days without having to make the milk each time.

It’s also the perfect drink for St. Patrick’s Day and spring! You can make it for yourself or for a get together.

How to Prepare Matcha

Whisking matcha properly is the most important step in making a smooth, clumpless matcha latte!

You’ll need a tea bowl and a bamboo whisk to make matcha.

First, soften your whisk in warm water. Sift your matcha into your bowl then add water. The amount of matcha you use depends on your taste preference; you can use my matcha ratio as a start! Start whisking slowly and then vigorously in a zigzag motion. Keep whisking until a froth forms, about 10-15 seconds. See my matcha whisking tutorial for a video and photo reference.

If you don’t have a whisk, that’s okay! You can make matcha without a whisk, although it won’t get you the same microfoam, it does the job. Plus, you can use tools you already have at home to make matcha without a whisk.

Tips:

Here are some tips for making a delicious Lucky Charms matcha latte at home:

  • Use Only Marshmallows: The cereal itself isn’t that sweet, and most of the sweetness actually comes from the mini marshmallows. For a sweeter Lucky Charms milk, you can use just the marshmallows (which you can buy on its own) and steep them into your milk. It might be easier to dissolve them in hot milk, then mix with cold.
  • Add a Cold Foam: For extra creaminess and sweetness, you can add a sweet cream cold foam on top, which not only adds flavor, but also acts as a pillow for your garnish!
