What are Lucky Charms?

Lucky Charms is a frosted, toasted oat cereal made by General Mills, which features small, colorful, bite-sized marshmallow bits (or marbits, as they call them).

It’s one of the most popular cereals in the States, sitting at number 4 on the list of top US cereals!

The marshmallows are colorful and come in all different shapes, like pink hearts, red balloons, a rainbow, and, of course, the iconic green clover. It debuted in 1964 after John Holahan created the cereal with cut-up Cheerios and Circus Peanuts (his favorite candy, the inspiration behind this cereal).

They’re one of my favorite childhood cereals, and I’ll still eat them from time to time for a sweet treat. I used to love the marshmallows, but as I’ve gotten older, the cereal bits are actually my favorite now!

What is a Lucky Charms Latte?

A Lucky Charms latte is simply an espresso drink made with Lucky Charms cereal milk! It has milk, ice, espresso, Lucky Charms milk, and is topped with more marbits. You easily make the milk by soaking the cereal until the milk turns a light blue color, then strain the bits out for a creamy latte base. You can also make a Lucky Charms matcha latte with the same milk!

This recipe makes the base latte, but people like to dress it up with a cold foam or whipped cream.

It’s one of my favorite cereal milk lattes to make and tastes great!

What Does a Lucky Charms Latte Taste Like?

This Lucky Charms latte tastes like a sweet, marshmallowy coffee. It’s not as toasted as a toasted marshmallow and more of a malty sweet, especially from the oat cereal pieces that give a grain flavor. It’s also not as sweet as you’d think! The grain cereal adds a slight savoriness that pairs with the sweet marshmallows so well.

It reminds me of a sweet graham cracker!

Lucky Charms Latte Recipe: Ingredients

Here’s what you’ll need to make a Lucky Charms latte at home:

  • Lucky Charms Cereal — This is the star of the show! You can find Lucky Charms in every American grocery store. Just look for the red box! For international folks, you can use the closest cereal you have to Lucky Charms (or peruse your local international store).
  • Milk — I love dairy, so I use 2% or whole milk. However, you can use any milk you’d like, including lactose-free, oat milk, soy milk, coconut milk, etc.
  • Espresso — Use your favorite espresso beans! I prefer a medium roast for a balanced mix of fruity, nutty, and bold flavors. I find that it pairs well with cereal milk, but a dark roast would also work nicely and have a more classic flavor.
  • Ice

How to Make a Lucky Charms Latte

  1. Steep Cereal. Add cereal and milk to a large cup or bowl and stir until all the cereal is wet. Let the cereal steep in the milk for 5 to 10 minutes, or until the milk turns a light blue-green. The longer you steep it, the more cereal flavor infuses!
  2. Strain the cereal out by pouring the cereal and milk through a sieve. Chill the milk until ready to use.
  3. Brew Espresso. Brew 1-2 shots of your favorite espresso beans using an espresso machine. You can also use instant espresso powder, cold brew concentrate, or a moka pot as an espresso replacement.
  4. Assemble Drink. Add ice, cereal milk, and espresso to a separate glass, then top with Lucky Charm marshmallows!
  5. Mix and Enjoy! Serve with a straw and enjoy!

Tips for the Best Lucky Charms Latte

  • Add Sweetener: The cereal milk is less sweet than expected. If you want more sweetness, add a teaspoon of sweetener like simple syrup, vanilla syrup, or marshmallow syrup! It will boost the flavor.
  • Use a Single-Serve Cereal: If you only want to make one latte, you can buy the single-serving Lucky Charms cereal bowls! That way, you spend less money and won’t have cereal sitting in your cabinet for a year until you want to make this latte again!
  • Add a Cold Foam: This latte plain is great, but it’s even better with a soft cold foam! Make a vanilla cold foam or marshmallow cold foam for extra creaminess!

FAQ’s

Can I make this hot?

Yes, you can steep the cereal in hot milk, then use that as the base for a hot Lucky Charms latte! Warmer temperatures may speed up the infusion process, so keep an eye on your milk!

Can I use a different cereal?

Technically, you could swap out Lucky Charms for literally any cereal! The process is the same, but you won’t get that unique, sweet grain flavor Lucky Charms has with other cereals.

How much caffeine is in this?

This latte has 1 – 2 shots of espresso, which is 60 to 120 mg of caffeine, respectively. That’s a lot of caffeine! If you’re caffeine sensitive, you can use decaf coffee or brew a half-caf espresso, which is half decaf beans and half regular beans.
