What is a Guava Matcha Latte?

I first saw this combination at a local boba store near me called Haiku Teahouse, which has a guava matcha and guava hojicha! I’m a creature of habit so I just get my usual black sesame hoijcha or oolong milk tea with boba, but I recently pulled the plug and wow, it’s good.
The guava adds just the perfect fruity juiciness which mellows out with the creamy matcha! Around the same time, my friend gifted me Trader Joe’s lucrative guava jam and made a guava matcha latte at home with it.
This recipe is that exact drink: a guava matcha latte made from guava jam, lactose free milk, and whisked matcha. Honestly, it’s one of the best matcha combinations I’ve ever had. It gives my ultimate favorite mango matcha latte a run for its money.
What Does a Guava Matcha Latte Taste Like?

Hmm, a guava matcha latte tastes like a creamy guava milk with the yummiest umami flavor. It’s probably most similar to a guava ice cream with matcha or any creamy guava treat with a hint of savory.
It’s unlike anything I’ve had! Now it makes me wish that guava creamsicles existed, because that would be the exact flavor.
Do Guava and Matcha Go Together?
You bet! Matcha has a slightly savory and umami flavor, which you might not think pairs well with sweet fruits. But, sweet and savory is a classic combination, and while matcha isn’t exactly salty, it definitely has savory qualities. So, matcha contrasts and complements sweet flavors nicely.
I think it pairs best with fruits that aren’t too tart, like mango, guava, apple, etc. While I love a strawberry or blueberry matcha from time to time, it doesn’t strike that nice balance in my opinion. Often, berries will overpower matcha!
Guava supremacy forever…
How to Add Guava Flavor

There are 4 ways to add guava: syrup, puree, concentrate, and jam. I use guava jam in this recipe because I think it gives the best flavor (surprisingly), but you can use whatever you have available to you.
Guava is quite a mild flavor by itself unless you use a large quantity of it. For homemade guava syrup, you’ll want to scoop out the seeds, leaving the flesh for infusing. For the most guava flavor, you’ll want to use a lot of guava, maybe 2 cups to a cup of water and a cup of sugar. Just simmer and reduce!
Guava puree will be kind of chunky and thick, so it might not be great if you want a smooth drink. However, it goes give you that fresh guava flavor! You can also use guava juice concentrate but it may water down the milk.
I like guava jam because it has less water than juice or syrup, has a strong, concentrated flavor, and (at least the Trader Joe’s one) is not too sweet and tastes like actual guava!
How to Make Guava Jam
If you can’t get your hands on the Trader Joe’s guava jam, have no fear! One, you can try a different brand of jam (there are so many). Two, you can make it yourself if you have loads of fresh guava to get rid of.
You’ll want to use 1 cup of sugar and water for every 2 cups of guava.
The hack to a delicious jam is to macerate the fruit before you cook it! Wash and halve the guavas, then let it sit in sugar for a couple of hours or until the juice pulls out. Then, simmer the mixture on the stove until the guava flesh is really soft. You can mash it if you want before letting it cool slightly and blending and straining to get the seeds out.
At this point, throw it back on the stove, add in some additional sugar, and cook it out (stirring constantly) until you get that jammy texture. You can add some pink or red coloring for that signature guava color.
And voila! You’ll never feel FOMO for the TJ guava jam again, and it might taste even better!
How to Whisk Matcha

Making matcha at home sounds simple until you end up with clumps. When matcha isn’t whisked well, it won’t fully blend with milk and you’ll end up with a gritty drink. Luckily, it’s easy to learn how to whisk matcha properly!
Here’s what you’ll need: matcha powder, a small sieve, a matcha bowl (chawan), hot or room temperature water, and a bamboo whisk (chasen). Soak the chasen in warm water for a few seconds to soften the bristles.
Start by sifting your matcha into the bowl to break up any clumps. Then add a small amount of hot (but not boiling) water and whisk in a quick zigzag or “M” motion using your wrist, not your arm. After about 15–20 seconds, you should see a layer of tiny, creamy bubbles, that’s your sign it’s perfectly whisked and ready to use.
Once your matcha is smooth and foamy, pour it into your milk (hot or iced) and enjoy!
No bamboo whisk? You can also use a handheld frother, a small electric whisk, or even shake your matcha in a sealed jar. Just be sure to sift it first for best results!

How to Customize
This guava matcha drink is super easy to customize! That’s the beauty of a homecafe, haha. Here are some ideas:
- Make it vegan: Use your favorite plant-based milk! For this drink, I actually love lactose free milk.. it’s so good.
- Add garnish: Add a sprig of thyme or herb for greenery, a slice of guava, freeze dried guava, etc. Get creative!
- Use guava juice: You can use guava juice concentrate as a replacement for guava jam. It might be more sugary, less guava forward, and make your matcha latte more watery, but it will taste delicious.
- Use real guava: Mash up some guava with sugar and a little water for a fresh guava puree! Add that into your drink!
- Make it stronger: For a stronger drink, use an extra half teaspoon or teaspoon of matcha powder. You can also use a little more guava to balance it.
- Make it hot: This would taste amazing hot! Just steam milk and dissolve the guava jam straight into it before adding whisked matcha.

Notes
Tips:
- Make Layers: This is one of the easiest drinks to layer! The jam sticks to the glass easily, which won’t move when you add ice and milk. Make sure to pour the whisked matcha directly onto the ice so it creates a nice layer on top!
- Mix Jam into Milk: When you drink this matcha, I recommend mixing the jam into the milk before drinking. This gives you the best smooth guava flavor in your matcha latte. Otherwise, you’ll be drinking chunks of jam which is unpleasant.
- Garnish With Fresh Guava: Nothing beats a cute garnish on a cute drink! You can use mint sprigs, a dusting of matcha, or cut up a slice of pink guava! It makes for a tasty snack, too.
- Store Jam in Fridge: Once you open jam, you need to refrigerate it so it doesn’t go bad. It might not seem intuitive since its sold on shelves in store, but trust me, it needs the cold to last a long time.
- Use Lactose Free Milk: I actually prefer this drink made with lactose free milk! It’s a little sweeter and gives a nice creamy finish. I find that dairy milk doesn’t taste as good with the guava jam.
