What is a Guava Cream Matcha Latte?

It’s a matcha latte with guava syrup and a guava cream top for the ultimate creamy matcha beverage. I’ve loved guava in matcha since Trader Joe’s came out with their popular guava jam. But I tried an elevated version from a local coffee shop called Academic Coffee, which was so good!
They took it off their regular menu, so now I’ve resorted to making it at home and got pretty close! It uses a fresh guava puree, sweetened and whipped into a cream top, which is then added to a matcha latte that has guava syrup in it. It’s not a very common pairing, but it should be!
Do Guava and Matcha Taste Good Together?

Guava and matcha are phenomenal. Matcha is slightly bitter and earthy, so it pairs well with flavors that contrast it but do not overpower it. Things like strawberry, blueberry, white chocolate, condensed milk, etc. Guavas are mildly sweet but incredibly aromatic! They balance with matcha really nicely, and you can taste both flavors without losing either.
I love using guava jam in matcha because it’s slightly tangy and sweet. It’s almost like a cross between a strawberry and a pear. But with a little extra richness, it’s just incredible.
What Guavas to Use

Use any ripe pink guavas you have. Pink guavas, while less sweet than white, are more aromatic and juicier. They also have fewer seeds, so it’s perfect for pureeing. You can also sweeten the guava puree, but the aroma is really important for this drink. Plus, it gives you a beautiful pink color!
Make sure to use ripe guavas; the guava flavor will be very faint otherwise. You can tell a guava is ripe by how aromatic it is and how soft the skin is. It should give with a gentle push into its skin.

Tips for the Best Guava Cream Matcha Latte
- Use Ripe Guava: The riper the fruit, the sweeter (and better) it is! Use ripe guavas for the best aroma and flavor. Look for a guava whose skin gives a little if you press into it, and a sweet, musky aroma.
- Don’t Overblend Guava: Since we are blending guava with its seeds, avoid blending for too long so that the guava puree doesn’t turn into a thick paste.
- Sweeten Generously: I found that this drink tastes better on the sweeter side, so sweeten, taste, and sweeten as desired. Don’t be afraid to add a little more, but little by little.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use jam instead?
Yes! That’s a really great hack, and it’s convenient. You can add it to the base of your matcha latte as a sweetener and also in the guava cream top. As long as you use a good-quality jam made with real fruit, it will taste as good as the fresh puree. Jam might be sweeter and hard to adjust the sugar in your drink, but it’s delicious and fast!
Can I make this hot?
Sure, instead of using cold milk and ice, steam or warm some milk until hot, then pour it on top of the matcha “shot” with guava flavor in it. I would make the guava cream stiff like whipped cream to add on top, so it melts more slowly than the cold foam version.
