Earl Grey and matcha are such an underrated combo for an iced, creamy drink. The bergamot goes so well with the creaminess of matcha and, with the added milk, makes an addictive liquid.
You can enjoy this iced or hot, and make this again and again! These two popular teas are incredible together and are a great blend of floral, fruity, umami, and sweetness.
Here’s how you can make this delicious Earl Grey matcha latte at home!
What is an Earl Grey Matcha Latte?
An Earl Grey matcha latte is the perfect marriage of two beloved teas that create a delicious and refreshing milk tea. You have the citrusy, floral flavors of Earl Grey tea and matcha’s earthy, slightly sweet profile, which blend together well.
The result is a creamy, caffeinated drink that feels indulgent yet light. It’s one of my favorite flavor combinations and genuinely addictive!
What is in an Earl Grey Matcha Latte?

This Earl Grey Matcha latte has Earl Grey tea leaves, whole milk, brown sugar, ice, water, and matcha tea powder.
The base is a rich Earl Grey-infused milk, made by steeping the tea in hot milk until it’s infused with its distinctive bergamot flavor. Matcha powder is then whisked with water to create a smooth, frothy layer that crowns the drink.
You can optionally also add vanilla extract or a sweetener of your choice to enhance the flavor. Whether you like it sweet, slightly bitter, or somewhere in between, this versatile drink can be customized to your taste.
Earl Grey Latte vs. London Fog
An Earl Grey latte and a London Fog are basically cousins with each other, similar but slightly different.
An Earl Grey latte typically consists of Earl Grey tea concentrate and milk, with the option to add a sweetener for a creamy, comforting experience.
On the other hand, a London Fog is an Earl Grey tea latte with vanilla or lavender syrup, giving it a sweeter, more dessert-like flavor profile.
However, some places may sell a London Fog without the flavored syrup, so it’s understandable to mistake one for the other. So, technically, this could also be called a London Fog Matcha Latte!
What Does an Earl Grey Matcha Latte Taste Like?
A London Fog matcha latte is a delicious blend of bold and creamy flavors.
First, you taste a citrusy, floral base, and then, you get the matcha earthy depth and slight umami flavor. The creaminess of the steeped milk rounds out the sharpness of the matcha and the bergamot, while a touch of sweetness ties it all together. The brown sugar gives it a subtle caramel-like flavor.
Each sip offers so many flavor layers, making this latte a treat for your taste buds and a standout addition to your cafe drink rotation!
Do Matcha and Earl Grey Go Together?

Surprisingly, matcha and Earl Grey make a fantastic duo.
The matcha adds a rich depth, while the Earl Grey keeps things light and aromatic. Although Earl Grey and matcha have very different flavor profiles, they pair nicely! And, as they say, opposites attract, and matcha’s creaminess goes well with fruity or tangy flavors.
You’ll often see matcha and Earl Grey in desserts like cakes, cookies, or macarons! The teas make the perfect base for cream-forward desserts or drinks, and it’s divine.
Best Sweetener For an Earl Grey Matcha
The best sweetener for an Earl Grey matcha latte depends on your personal taste. Classic granulated sugar or simple syrup works well to keep the flavor clean and straightforward. For a deeper, more caramel-like sweetness, try brown sugar or honey, which are popular in hot tea lattes.
For this recipe, I prefer brown sugar because it adds a layer of caramel-like sweetness that pairs so well with creamy flavors.
Maple syrup is another great option, adding a warm, earthy note that complements both the matcha and Earl Grey. Whichever you choose, start with a small amount and adjust to taste—this latte shines when the sweetness is balanced with the tea’s natural flavors.
How to Make Earl Grey Milk

I could drink the Earl Grey milk by itself. It’s that good.
Start by steeping your Earl Grey tea in a small saucepan with your brown sugar and hot water for 1-2 minutes. Then, add the milk of your choice (dairy or non-dairy) and warm it up until hot but not boiling.
Let the tea steep for 3–5 minutes, depending on how strong you like your tea or until the milk turns a rich brown.
Once the tea is fully infused, remove the tea bag or leaves and cool before serving. The milk will have a rich brown color and a fragrant aroma, ready to be combined with matcha for a delicious latte.

Earl Grey Syrup vs. Earl Grey Milk
You can use Earl Grey syrup or Earl Grey milk to infuse your drink with flavor.
You can make Earl Grey syrup by steeping tea in a simple syrup of sugar and water, resulting in a concentrated, sweet liquid that can be added to drinks or desserts.
Earl Grey milk, on the other hand, is less sweet and has a creamier consistency, making it ideal for lattes.
While syrup is great for adding a burst of flavor, I prefer using steeped milk! The Earl Grey milk makes a more subtle, balanced base for this drink than syrup does, and you can control the sweetness more!
