Dates are one of the best sweet fruits because they’re super healthy and won’t spike your blood sugar! There’s a reason why so many people love them, like those with diabetes, vegans, and more. And these fruits are fantastic with matcha, like in this creamy and delicious date matcha latte!
The dates add the perfect touch of sweetness to matcha and don’t impart any weird flavors. It gives it a nice caramel-like flavor without the sugary rush. It’s also so easy to make with a blender and in 10 minutes.
Here’s how to make this creamy date matcha latte at home!
What is a Date Matcha Latte?

A date matcha latte is a date-sweetened matcha latte. As long as there are dates in the drink, it doesn’t matter what form they were in. Whole, puree, syrup, dried, etc., you can use practically any form of dates and get a delicious date matcha latte!
Specifically, the milk is sweetened using dates, and in this recipe, we blend softened dates into milk, which then acts as the base for our matcha latte.
It’s not too sweet, gives the perfect touch of sugar, and also a creamy texture to the matcha latte. I prefer blending the dates straight into the milk, but you can also use date syrup or juice, too.
Are Dates Good with Matcha?
Yes! Honestly, most sweeteners work well with matcha, but I like dates a little more than sweeteners like honey or maple syrup since it doesn’t impart a strong flavor. With honey, you can definitely taste the honey in the latte, which, if you don’t like that taste, will leave a bad taste in your mouth.
Dates are subtly sweet with a flavor similar to brown sugar or caramel but without the smokiness. It adds just the right amount of richness, which is balanced perfectly with the matcha savoriness.
Why Use Dates?

If you’re sensitive to sugar or just want more natural forms of sugar, dates are perfect for you! Dates, while they contain a high amount of sugar (around 15-18 g per date), also have a low glycemic index (about 45), which means it doesn’t spike blood sugar rapidly.
But besides being a great source of sugar, it also has a lot of fiber and antioxidants, which is why many consider it a health food. They’re also just plain tasty, and you’ll find dozens of recipes for dates in desserts, food, drinks, and more.
Is This Date Matcha Latte Vegan?
The default recipe has milk, so this recipe isn’t vegan.
However, you can easily make it vegan by swapping out the dairy milk for your favorite plant-based milk. You can substitute with oat, soy, almond, or coconut milk for a creamy matcha latte. Personally, I’d probably use oat milk since it’s the creamiest and has the least strong flavor compared to other mylks.
Just add the dates straight into your non-dairy milk, blend, and serve!
How to Make Date Milk

I go more into details below, but date milk is just date-sweetened milk. You can make it with any milk you’d like, like fat-free, 2%. whole, oat, macadamia, etc. Date-sweetened milk is super versatile, and you can use it for any latte or drink.
First, soak your dates in hot water for 3-5 minutes or until the dates are soft. This just helps make it easier for your blender to mix it into the milk. Then, add your milk and blend until there are no large date chunks and your milk is smooth.
You can strain it to get rid of the remaining pulp, but I like leaving it in the milk for extra fiber and texture.
How to Make Matcha

Of course, making matcha properly is an important part of making a smooth matcha latte.
Most people know that you have to whisk matcha before consuming it, but actually whisking it is another story. To whisk matcha, you’ll need a bamboo whisk, a shallow bowl, a tea sift, and matcha powder.
You’ll want to soak your whisk in warm water before use to soften the bristles. Then, sift your matcha powder into the bowl and add water. Hydrate all the powder with the whisk before vigorously whisking the matcha in a zigzag motion until a foam forms on top. (Step by step tutorial.)
Once you get a beautiful matcha foam, your whisked matcha is ready to drink!

Tips:
Here are some tips to help you make a delicious date matcha latte at home!
- Soften Dates with Hot Water: If you have really dried dates that are hard on the outside, soften them with a little bit of hot water before blending. Soak the dates for 2-5 minutes or until they are soft and easily torn.
- Add Cinnamon: For extra flavor, add a dash of cinnamon powder or other warm spice to give the matcha latte a kick. Dates go great with spices, so experiment with your favorites!
- Use Date Syrup: No dates? No worries! You can use date syrup as a replacement in the cream and matcha latte. Plus, it’s easy to use since it’s already in syrup form.
