Incredibly Easy Refreshing Coconut Matcha Water

This is probably the easiest matcha drink to make ever. You only need coconut water, matcha powder, water, and ice. That’s it! It takes less than 3 minutes to make, and you’ll have a delicious and refreshing matcha drink that is healthy for you!

Honestly, I would make this every day! It’s simple and delicious while slightly different and better from matcha and water. Plus, you feel really good after drinking these superfoods together.

Here’s how to make coconut matcha water at home!

Is Matcha with Coconut Water Good?

Matcha with coconut water is so refreshing! Coconut water is already naturally sweet, and it balances out the earthiness of matcha well. It’s also not watery and gives matcha a nice texture since it’s slightly more viscous than water.

Matcha itself is pretty savory and bitter, but it nearly disappears in coconut water and is replaced with a lovely umami and toasty flavor.

I also love that you don’t need to add sugar to coconut matcha water since the coconut already provides ample sweetness! This is one of those drinks that make my skin feel clean, and my hair feel luscious, haha. It’s such a healthy and revitalizing drink and a great way to get a good energy boost.

What are the Benefits of Coconut Water?

There’s a reason coconut water is so popular with athletes and people in fitness!

Coconut water has a ton of health benefits, including:

  • Hydration: Coconuts are a source of naturally occurring electrolytes like potassium, sodium, and manganese, which we need for hydration.
  • Maintain Blood Sugar: There is little to no added sugar in coconut water, and it has a low glycemic index, making it safe for people watching their blood sugar. It also has the potential to lower blood sugar.
  • Lower Blood Pressure: Because of its high potassium, coconut water helps lower blood pressure significantly.
  • Antioxidants and Nutrients: Coconut water has many nutrients, including vitamins, amino acids, minerals, etc.

So, it’s the perfect liquid to add to your matcha, which is also high in nutrients and antioxidants. You can also make a creamy version of the coconut matcha water by whipping up a matcha cream and topping your coconut water for a creamy and refreshing matcha coconut cloud!

What are the Benefits of Matcha?

Just like coconut water, matcha also has many health benefits.

Matcha is known for being healthy because it has a lot of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory substances. This study says matcha also has many catechins, which are phenolic compounds that benefit human health.

This study showed that matcha enhanced spatial learning, improved glucose metabolism, and reduced neuroinflammation in mice, supporting their claim that matcha has therapeutic properties.

I didn’t even know matcha had so many beneficial properties until writing this article, but I’m surprised how much of a healthy food it is!

Together, matcha and coconut water make an incredible health tonic of sorts, with antioxidant and hydrating properties that will make your skin feel clear (lol).

What Does Coconut Matcha Water Taste Like?

First, you taste umami matcha, followed by coconut water’s refreshing and subtle sweetness. They work incredibly well together, and this drink’s flavors are equally balanced. No flavor overpowers the other, and they work in harmony! Truly!

There’s a sweet and savory quality to coconut matcha water, thanks to the natural electrolytes in coconut water. Matcha also has a savory quality to it, with some more flavorful matchas leaning into seaweed flavor territory.

When cold, this drink is so, so refreshing, and I can imagine finishing a workout and gulping it down to replenish electrolytes and energy. It’s addicting in the best way!

How to Prepare Matcha

The traditional way to prepare matcha is by whisking matcha powder and water in a tea bowl using a tea whisk. You move the tea whisk in a Z or zigzag motion up across the bowl until you get a froth. This creates a microfoam that makes the matcha extremely smooth and creamy!

However, there are also other ways to prepare matcha as well without extra tools. You can shake the matcha and water in a lidded jar, mix it with a handheld frother, or make your own whisk using a fork or mini whisk.

As long as the matcha powder gets mixed into water well, it doesn’t really matter how you do it. You’ll get the best texture with the traditional tea bowl and whisk, though.

How to Make Coconut Matcha Water

To make coconut matcha water, you’ll need:

  • Coconut water
  • Matcha powder
  • Ice
  • Water

That’s it!

Coconut Matcha Water Recipe

Whisk your matcha powder and water in a tea bowl using a tea whisk. Use a zigzag motion to incorporate the most air and create a fluffy froth. You can also use any other mixing or whisking method you have available to you.

Add ice and coconut water into a separate glass, then top with your whisked matcha.

Mix and enjoy!

Best Coconut Water

Not all coconut waters are alike! However, the best way to know what is best for you is to try different coconut water brands. I really like Vita Coco and Harmless Harvest, but I haven’t tried too many other brands. Large grocery brands also have their own brand of coconut water, like 365 for Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s.

Ideally, you can open a fresh coconut and use that coconut water (the best and freshest)! However, most of us will probably have to buy it post-coconut.

There are also pink coconut waters, which apparently taste sweeter and nuttier?

Can I Use Coconut Milk?

Yes, you can use coconut milk instead of coconut water, but the taste will be very different. Carton coconut milk will be much richer in flavor and have a milky texture. Canned coconut milk will be extremely thick and rich because of its higher fat content.

These substitutions will still give you a delicious matcha, but it won’t be as refreshing as matcha with coconut water!

Notes

It’s better to whisk matcha in water first before adding it into the coconut water so that you have a really smooth texture. If you add matcha powder directly into liquid, it tends to clump up. You can alternatively whisk matcha with a little coconut water, too!

Tips

Here are some tips for making a refreshing coconut matcha water at home!

  • You could mix coconut water and matcha together instead of regular water to have an extra flavorful drink.
  • I don’t recommend adding any extra sugar to this drink, but if it’s not sweet enough, add it in small increments and taste after each addition.
  • For a creamy twist, add a splash or canned or carton coconut milk! You could also add regular milk or even cream if you want it extra creamy.
