Easy Coconut Matcha Cloud Drink You Need to Try

Imagine a creamy, refreshing drink that transports you straight to the beach. This coconut matcha cloud drink is just that! It’s light and refreshing, even with the heavy cream on top. You might be skeptical, and so was I, but it’s such a delicious drink that I would 100% make it again.

The coconut water adds a subtle sweetness that makes it perfect for replenishing electrolytes and hydration and goes perfectly with cream. Plus, the matcha adds a nice energy boost when you want to stay awake.

So, here’s how to make a coconut matcha cloud at home!

What is a Matcha Cloud?

A matcha cloud is just matcha cream or cold foam. It got its name from its cloud-like appearance: a fluffy, soft, white cream on top of coffee or matcha. Usually sweetened, a matcha cloud is a great drink topper for extra creaminess.

It also makes drinks look cute and taste even better. Once you mix the matcha powder into the cream, it takes on a light green hue.

If you don’t sweeten it, it tastes like a creamy mild matcha. However, it’s addicting once you add some sweetener in it, similar to matcha ice cream. It’s also super easy to make, and all you need is matcha powder and heavy cream.

What’s in a Coconut Matcha Cloud?

A coconut matcha cloud is coconut water with a fluffy matcha cream on top, all over ice.

This drink made its way around social media from Thailand, which is known for its huge coffee and matcha scene. It looks so cool, with a slightly transparent body and a fluffy, light green cloud foam.

You can make the cream with either coconut or heavy cream, giving you the same fluffy texture. However, the coconut cream will impart a more robust coconut flavor overall, while the heavy cream provides a dairy taste instead.

What Does a Coconut Matcha Cloud Taste Like?

This drink is so addicting.

The coconut matcha cloud is creamy, slightly sweet, and super refreshing. The coconut water, while sweet, has a savory quality to it, similar to Gatorade. It’s not sweet like desserts and is more hydrating than anything.

The cream on top blends into the coconut water, making it super creamy and delicious. I was skeptical of it at first, but coconut itself has a high-fat content, so it makes sense that coconut water and extra fats make it taste even better.

It’s a nice hydrating treat that will give you a nice caffeine boost.

Are Matcha and Coconut Good Together?

Matcha and coconut are great together!

Coconut water has a refreshing sweetness that pairs well with matcha’s slight bitterness and earthiness. They complement each other nicely in various forms: ice cream, lattes, smoothies, smoothie bowls, etc.

Matcha also tastes good with various forms of coconut: coconut water, coconut milk, coconut shavings, etc. Although I’ve never tried matcha coconut chocolate or baked goods, but I’m sure it tastes good.

The extra creaminess of coconut also helps balance the umami and bitter side of matcha.

What Are the Benefits of Coconut Water?

Coconut water has a ton of benefits, including:

  • Hydration: Coconuts are a source of naturally occurring electrolytes like potassium, sodium, and manganese, which we need for hydration.
  • Maintain Blood Sugar: There is little to no added sugar in coconut water and it has a low glycemic index, making it safe for people watching their blood sugar. It also has the potential to lower blood sugar.
  • Lower Blood Pressure: Because of its high potassium, coconut water helps lower blood pressure significantly.
  • Antioxidants and Nutrients: Coconut water has a lot of nutrients, including various vitamins, amino acids, minerals, etc.

So, it’s the perfect liquid to add to your matcha, which is also high in nutrients and antioxidants. You can also make a dairy-free version of the coconut matcha cloud by adding matcha straight into coconut water for a refreshing and easy drink!

How to Whisk Matcha

There are many ways to prepare matcha and you can choose the one that is more accessible for you! There are three most popular ways:

  1. Traditional Matcha Bowl and Whisk
    • Traditionally, you prepare matcha using a bowl and whisk made for tea whisking, called a chawan and chasen, respectively. You add the matcha powder and water into the bowl. Then, you whisk it in zigzag motions using the whisk, which will create a delicious froth on top. This is important for drinking texture and flavor!
  2. Handheld Frother
    • Not everyone wants to invest in a matcha set, which is okay! You can also prepare matcha using a handheld frother, which will also aerate and mix your matcha. Note that this method won’t get a nice velvety froth like you would with a matcha whisk, but it does the job, and the matcha is mixed with water. It makes it easy to make your matcha and drink in the same cup.
  3. Shaking in a Lidded Jar
    • If you’re really on a budget or simply don’t have any other materials, you can always shake your matcha powder and water in a lidded jar or bottle. This will also help mix the matcha and create some air bubbles! Again, you won’t get that creamy froth on top, but you won’t really taste it if you’re making a matcha latte.

First, add your cream and matcha into a bowl or cup. Then, whip your matcha cream using an electric whisk or handheld frother until it thickens but is still pourable. We don’t want to make whipped cream.

Tip: For a smoother cream, prepare your matcha in a bit of water, then add it to the cream. Adding the matcha powder straight into the cream increases your chances of clumps.

Then, add ice and coconut water into a separate cup.

Top your drink with your matcha cloud foam, mix, and enjoy!

Tips

Here are some tips for making a delicious coconut matcha cloud drink at home!

  • Try different coconut water brands to see if there are differences in flavor! Not all coconut water brands are alike; some may be sweeter than others.
  • Add sugar or sweetener to the cream if the drink isn’t sweet enough. Perhaps, add coconut sugar to be on the theme!
  • Sift your matcha before use to get a silky smooth cream and prevent any clumps of matcha powder. Once you have matcha clumps, mixing them with anything other than water is hard.
