Here’s how to make this rich chocolate-covered strawberry matcha latte at home!

What is a Chocolate Covered Strawberry Matcha Latte?

This matcha latte has all the flavors of a chocolate-covered strawberry with chocolate and strawberry syrup. It also has a creamy strawberry cold foam that makes it super decadent and delicious.

It’s an elevated version of a flavored matcha latte that you can experiment with and have fun with! Plus, it’s a great themed matcha for Valentine’s Day (or Galentines/Palentines.)

While it doesn’t have a chocolate-covered strawberry in it, it has different versions of both ingredients that make it taste like it!

You can enjoy it hot or cold, but I prefer it cold—it’s super refreshing!

What Does a Chocolate-Covered Strawberry Matcha Latte Taste Like?

This drink definitely tastes like a chocolate-covered strawberry with a hint of matcha!

It gives the experience of biting into a chocolate strawberry and washing it down with a matcha drink. You taste the yummy bitter chocolate aftertaste and the juicy strawberry. Then, there’s a subtle matcha kick that’s earthy and slightly bitter. There are definitely a lot of flavor layers!

However, I feel like the chocolate and strawberry kind of overpower the matcha; the matcha flavor is quite subtle. It does give an earthier flavor. But if a subtle matcha is your vibe, then this flavor combo is perfect for you!

Does Matcha and Chocolate Go Together?

Actually, matcha and chocolate share a lot of similar flavors, so there’s a lot of overlap when they’re together! Some matcha powders are actually described as having a chocolatey aroma and taste because it has that same bitterness that makes chocolate so addicting.

Usually, matcha is paired with white chocolate, which is sweet and creamy and lets the matcha flavor shine through.

Matcha with regular chocolate like milk chocolate or dark chocolate also tastes good, but the flavors mix and you get a subtle aftertaste of matcha alongside the cacao. A lot of desserts feature matcha and chocolate, like Royce Nama chocolate, matcha lava cake, matcha chocolate puddings, etc.

Both pair really nicely though, so you can’t go wrong with either! It just depends on your taste.

What Chocolate to Use

Depending on your tastes, you can use either cocoa powder or melted chocolate for this matcha recipe.

Melting chocolate requires an extra step, but it gives a creamier, richer flavor compared to cocoa powder. The nice thing, though, is that it is already sweetened so it’s easy to just melt and add it to your drink. You can use any type of chocolate, from milk, to semisweet, to dark.

I recommend adding melting chocolate to a little warm milk first, then adding it to your drink. That way, the chocolate will be smooth and not clumpy.

Cocoa powder is super easy to add to a drink, but has a more bittersweet flavor and thinner texture. You want to mix the cocoa powder in warm water or milk first, then add it to your drink. Cocoa powder tends to clump up if you add it directly into liquid, so it’s best to make it a paste first.

How to Make Matcha

It might be an extra step, but trust me, preparing matcha powder correctly makes a huge difference! The guaranteed way to get rid of clumps is by whisking them in water, which is the traditional preparation method!

Whisking matcha in water removes all the clumps that can make a matcha drink super gritty and unpleasant. I hear that Starbucks matcha recently has been really clumpy, which many people do not enjoy.

To whisk matcha, you’ll need a matcha bowl and whisk. Sift your matcha powder into your bowl, then add your water. Using your prepared whisk, start whisking your matcha in a zigzag motion until foam forms at the surface of your tea. Stop when you get a nice foam!

You can check out my in-depth matcha whisking tutorial, which has much more detailed steps and a video to follow for reference.

Note: If you don’t have a matcha whisk, you can also make matcha without a whisk with an electric frother or shaking it in a jar.

How to Make Chocolate Syrup

There’s no need to buy chocolate syrup when you can make it at home for a fraction of the price!

All you need for homemade chocolate syrup is cocoa powder, water, and sugar. That’s it!

First, you want to dissolve the water and sugar together, then reduce it until your desired consistency. You’re essentially making simple syrup. Mix your cocoa powder with a little bit of warm water. This will help get rid of any clumps and give you a smooth syrup.

Once your syrup is done, mix in your cocoa powder paste and stir to combine.

For an easy version, you can just combine cocoa powder, water, and sugar together until well combined. This is perfect for single portions and when you don’t want a really sweet chocolate syrup.

How to Make Strawberry Syrup

Just like chocolate syrup, strawberry syrup is also super easy to make! There are multiple ways to make strawberry syrup, and each one gives a different texture, so you can choose depending on what texture you want.

For this recipe, I made a smooth and chunky strawberry sauce.

For the smooth strawberry syrup, I blended strawberries and added sugar and water, then reduced them in a small pot until I got the desired consistency.

For chunky strawberry sauce, cut up strawberries into half-inch pieces and add white sugar. Then, let them soak until the juices pull out.

I like the texture variety of strawberry syrups, which helps make a more interesting drink! Both methods are written out in my strawberry syrup blog.

Can I Use Chocolate Milk?

If making homemade syrups just isn’t your thing, no worries, you can also use chocolate or strawberry milk for this drink! It makes it much faster and easier to make, plus it will have the nostalgic flavor of your favorite flavored milk.

For store-bought milk, you can use equal ratios of both chocolate and strawberry milk or experiment depending on how it tastes. Some cons of using storebought milk are there are often lots of artificial flavorings or stabilizers in them and sugar.

A good workaround, though, is to dilute the flavored milk with regular milk for a less sweet matcha latte!

You can also use the instant chocolate or strawberry milk powders, too!
