Matcha and blueberries are such an underrated flavor combination and honestly, sometimes, dare I say, better than strawberry matcha. This blueberry matcha latte is creamy, fruity, and slightly earthy and so easy to make at home.
This matcha blueberry latte features a homemade blueberry syrup that is sweet and jammy, perfect for adding a touch of sweetness to your matcha. It takes less than 5 minutes to make and before you know it, you’ll have a delicious blueberry matcha drink that tastes just as good as the cafes.
So, here’s how to make a blueberry matcha latte at home!
What is a Blueberry Matcha Latte?

A blueberry matcha latte is a matcha latte with blueberry sauce or syrup in it! It’s an underrated flavor combination that is super creamy and fruity. This recipe in particular uses a homemade blueberry syrup that is easy to make.
The blueberry sauce mixes with the milk and creates a really pretty purple color which looks so nice with the whisked matcha on top. You can enjoy this drink hot or iced, but I think it tastes best iced. It’s refreshing and creamy!
What Does a Blueberry Matcha Latte Taste Like?
A matcha blueberry latte tastes earthy, slightly floral, sweet, creamy, and slightly tart! It’s a really delicious combination and the blueberries bring out matcha’s earthiness.
Blueberry matcha is a more mellow version of a strawberry matcha! It’s less tart and more woody in taste, and if you make your own blueberry sauce, it takes on a jam-like quality.
Does Matcha Go Well with Blueberries?

Blueberries, in particular, are a top-tier pairing with matcha. They add a burst of juicy flavor and a pop of vibrant color. Matcha’s earthy, slightly grassy flavor pairs well with bright, fruity notes, so berries like strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries are a great match.
Both share earthy undertones, but where matcha leans savory, blueberry brings a subtle tartness and sweetness that cuts through and balances the drink perfectly. The blueberry tartness makes matcha taste less bitter and makes for a balanced latte.
I think blueberry and matcha is an incredibly underrated flavor pairing with matcha, but luckily, you can easily add it to your matcha lattes at home.
How to Add Blueberry to Matcha
My favorite way of adding blueberry flavor to matcha is using a homemade blueberry sauce or syrup. Premade syrups are often really sugary and don’t have much of a fruit flavor, so I like making my own for a burst of fruit.
You can easily make blueberry syrup with blueberries, water, and sugar, cooking it until it reduces to your desired consistency. More details in the next paragraph! You can also make it by macerating cut blueberries with sugar and letting it sit for an hour before using.
If you don’t have blueberries, you can also use freeze-dried blueberry powder and mix it directly into your milk. This will give you a concentrated blueberry flavor without the extra steps.
For an easy hack, you can blend blueberries directly into your milk, but make sure to strain it after for a smooth drink. Or, for super convenience, add blueberry jam to your milk! However, jams are really sweet so add a little bit at a time.
How to Make Blueberry Syrup

For homemade blueberry syrup, add fresh or frozen blueberries, water, and sugar to a small pot, then bring to a simmer on medium heat. The sugar will dissolve, then the blueberries will release their juices as they heat up.
You can use a potato masher to crush more juice out of the fruit, and let the mixture reduce until you get your desired consistency.
For a runny syrup, cook it for less time. For a thicker syrup, let the mixture reduce for 5-10 minutes.
The syrup will be very purple in color, but if you want an extremely bright color, you can add food coloring. For an extra level of flavor, add a little bit of vanilla extract! You can even sub out the sugar for brown sugar for an extra yummy blueberry syrup.
How to Prepare Matcha
The best way to prepare matcha is to use a bamboo whisk, which gives you the nicest froth that makes matcha smooth and silky. You want to whisk your matcha powder and water using this bamboo whisk in a zigzag motion, whisking vigorously until foam forms.
However, you can also prepare matcha without a bamboo whisk! Some accessible options include:
- Shaking in a lidded jar or bottle
- Using a handheld frother
- Blending in a blender
These are just some options you can try to prepare your matcha! Although the bamboo whisk is best, these methods will also combine your matcha well enough to add to milk or water.
