What is a Blueberry Cheesecake Matcha Latte?

A blueberry cheesecake matcha latte is a smooth blueberry matcha latte with a cheesecake foam garnished with crushed graham crackers. This would be the result basically if a blueberry cheesecake and a matcha latte had a baby.

It was inspired by a drink I had from a local matcha business in San Jose called Last Chapter Cafe! They had a pop-up at my pilates studio and served a blueberry cheesecake matcha latte that was sweet, tangy, creamy, and earthy. It was such a nice combination of flavors and was a dessert-forward matcha that wasn’t too sweet.

The visuals are also stuuuuunning, like, why wouldn’t a luscious foam and a green matcha and blue syrup look good?!

What Does a Blueberry Cheesecake Matcha Latte Taste Like?

This drink tastes like liquid blueberry cheesecake with an earthy tea flavor. The matcha works well with the tangy cream cheese and blueberry, and you can still taste it after adding the creamy flavors. The matcha makes a nice base for the blueberry cheesecake and balances them nicely.

It also reminds me of vanilla yogurt mixed with blueberry and matcha!

Do Blueberry and Matcha Go Together?

Yes! Matcha pairs well with so many fruits, it’s insane. Because it’s earthy and slightly bitter, any sweet and tart fruit balances nicely with it, just like blueberries. Blueberries are sweet, tart, and woodsy, and the tea flavor makes them taste even sweeter.

Normally, you would use blueberry syrup in drinks, but sometimes it can have an artificial flavor. I love using fresh blueberries to get that burst of berry flavor that makes the matcha taste smoother and creamier. If you haven’t tried any blueberry matcha drinks, you need to!

Blueberry Cheesecake Matcha Latte Recipe: Ingredients

Here’s what you’ll need to make a blueberry cheesecake matcha latte:

  • Cheesecake Foam
  • Heavy Cream — Cream with 35% milkfat works best! Lower-fat creams or half and half won’t fluff up the same way.
  • Cream Cheese — Use room temperature cream cheese so that it mixes easily into the cream. Cold cream cheese may leave small lumps or make a chunkier texture.
  • Sugar — Regular granulated sugar or light brown sugar works! If you want an even smoother cream, use powdered sugar so it doesn’t need to dissolve.
  • Vanilla — A little vanilla extract really rounds out the flavors. You can also use vanilla bean paste or vanilla bean for a stronger vanilla flavor.
  • Blueberry Matcha Latte
  • Blueberries — Any fresh blueberries work! Frozen blueberries also work, just thaw before use and drain out most of the melted juice to keep the texture creamy.
  • Milk — 2% or whole milk works great! You can also substitute oat milk for a non-dairy alternative.
  • Ice
  • Matcha Powder — Use a bold, umami matcha powder for the best flavor! Softer or more floral forward matcha powders can get lost in the creamy flavors, so you want something you can taste even with sweetener and cream.
  • Water — Use hot water around 175 F for whisking matcha. Use a temperature-controlled kettle or eyeball it from the steam. The steam should come up in rolling clouds and not straight up.
  • Brown Sugar — I personally think brown sugar complements blueberries more than white sugar, so I like using light brown sugar in this drink. However, regular sugar also works perfectly.
  • Graham Cracker or Cookie (Optional) — Adding a little crumble on top mimics the cheesecake crust! It adds a nice little crunch and caramel flavor.

How to Make a Blueberry Cheesecake Matcha Latte

  1. Mash Blueberries. Wash and dry blueberries, then add them to the bottom of your cup with sugar. Use a pestle or other blunt-end object to muddle the blueberries until puree-like. If there’s undissolved sugar, you can add a little bit of hot water and dissolve it.
  2. Whisk Matcha. Sift matcha powder into a matcha bowl and add hot water. Using a chasen, vigorously whisk the matcha in a zigzag motion, hovering the whisk slightly above the bottom. Keep whisking (around 20 – 30 seconds) until frothy and velvety.
  3. Whip Cream. Add cream cheese, sugar, vanilla, and heavy cream to a small cup or bowl and whip using a handheld frother until soft and fluffy but still pourable.
  4. Assemble Drink. Add ice and milk to your muddled blueberries, then slowly add your whisked matcha for a nice layer. Top with your whipped cheesecake foam and garnish with crumbled graham crackers or cookies.
  5. Mix and Enjoy!

Tips for the Best Matcha Latte

  • Use Trader Joe’s Cannoli Dip: The hack for the cheesecake foam is to use Trader Joe’s sweet cannoli dip! It’s basically a sweet cream cheese dip made from literally all the ingredients sans heavy cream. It’s my favorite hack for sweet cheese cream, but it’s only available during winter.
  • Blend the Blueberries: If you want a smoother blueberry sauce, you can blend the blueberries into a puree and use that instead. The pieces will be smaller and less chunky. It’s easiest to blend with a little bit of water for a smooth texture.

FAQ’s

Can I use blueberry syrup?

Yes! You can make a homemade blueberry syrup and use that instead; it’ll add the same sweetness and fruity flavor. You can make a macerated syrup to preserve the fresh, juicy flavor or cook it for a jammy flavor. Blueberry jam also works in a pinch.
